    About the Author

    Tim Bishop owns and operates PerformFit Sports Experience, a sport performance and fitness facility, in Cockeysville, Maryland. He also creates strength and conditioning programs for Ripken Baseball’s summer camps and clinics. Bishop was the strength and conditioning coach for the Baltimore Orioles for 14 years. He also played professional baseball for the New York Yankees and took part in the NFL training camp in St. Louis.

    Bishop has appeared on numerous television and radio stations to promote health, fitness, and sport performance training. He is a frequent contributor to Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, and Maximum Fitness magazines. His training advice has appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, and NSCA Journal. He has lectured on a variety of topics for the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society, National Strength and Conditioning Association, M-F Athletics, and various colleges and universities. In addition, he is author of Stronger Legs and Lower Body (Human Kinetics, 2012) and coauthor of Baserunning (Human Kinetics, 2013) and Power for Sports Performance (Human Kinetics, 2006).

    Bishop has a bachelor’s degree in human movement and sport studies and a master’s degree in exercise science. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and a registered strength and conditioning coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

    Jay Shiner has over 24 years of professional experience in the fields of strength and conditioning, fitness management, sports medicine, and health promotion. He is the director of athletic performance training with the University of Rochester Medical Center—Sports Medicine in Rochester, New York.

    For 10 years Shiner was the strength and conditioning coach for Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles and worked at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and 1998 Winter Olympic Games. As an international lecturer and consultant, Shiner has worked with organizations such as the International Skating Union, Canadian Personal Trainers Association, and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) in both the United States and Japan.

    As an independent consultant, he trains athletes of all ages, sports, and levels. Shiner is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and certified personal trainer through the NSCA. Also a former middleweight professional kickboxer, Shiner holds bachelor's degrees in biology (emphasis in kinesiology) and organizational management.
